Killjoys S2E7 Recap: Heart Shaped Box

At least we sort of pick up where we left off last week! I was a little miffed that we didn’t see D’Avin (Luke MacFarlane) first thing.  As usual, this episode provided several great scenes between our Killjoys and Sabine (Tori Anderson) really shined in this episode!

We start off with Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) getting a booty call with Alvis (Morgan Kelly).  Things take a turn when her twin suddenly appears with a curved knife saying that it’s time to kill Alvis then proceeds to cut Alvis’s throat.  Dutch wakes from her dream (thank goodness it was that!) Alvis wakes up too from her tossing and turning.  She partially blames him for talking about the green goo because now she’s preoccupied with Khlyen (Rob Stewart) again.  She feels like she is the only one that can solve this mystery, even though Alvis thinks she shouldn’t pressure herself like that.  Now that her itch has been scratched, she cuts some cloth that was wrapped around Alvis’s wrist and dips.  Kinky.

D’Avin back in Old Town, is still in shock about Sabine croaking during sex. Or did she? D’Avin gets Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) who was in the middle of questioning Artura Senbek (Oluniké Adeliyi), the engineer he mentioned to Pawter last week.  He tries to convince her to talk about why the Company built the wall when D’Avin interrupts.  She unfortunately disappears.

John rushes upstairs.  Sabine is alive, barely!  Whew! D’Avin walks John through what happened.  John asks the tough question about if he went ape on her like he did with Dutch.  D’Avin says no and John laments about D’Avin’s track record.  Well at least they know that she’s now Level 6.  They need to get her on Lucy but how?  D’Avin looks at a big black bag that looks like it can fit a body.

They make it onto Lucy.  Dutch is wondering why the bartender is in a body bag.  D’Avin brings her up to speed.  Finding out that Ms. Sabine is a Level 6 gets Dutch excited to start questioning her.  It helps that with D’Avin having sex with Sabine, it somehow weakened her.

Sabine’s real name is Jenny Avery and she’s 89 freaking years old!  D’Avin sure knows how to pick ‘em!  Since a lot of green goo came out of her, that may be why she isn’t healing fast enough.  John wants to try to jolt her out of it. Before he does that he goes to his room to call Pawter to get some medical advice. He’s sending her Sabine’s med scans.  John updates Pawter about Senbek running from him.  He feels like he can only make headway if Pawter gets a warrant.

Go back to sleep Dutch Sabine giphy

John uses a really big needle to wake up Sabine.  She gasps and smiles at D’Avin.  Dutch gets in her face and punches her again. Dutch orders John to tie Sabine up for 20 questions.  Sabine, now restrained, claims to have been sent by Khlyen to protect D’Avin from Dutch.  Was that a dig?  Level 6 are soldiers serving the true purpose of the RAC, which still remains a mystery.  The two women exchange some more verbal barbs.  D’Avin pulls Dutch aside just as she is about to really start her torture.  He feels like Dutch is taking way more personally than he is considering he was the one that was wronged.  Dutch doesn’t like that he was used so it’s like she’s angry on his behalf.  Be that as it may they need someone else to do the questioning.  Turin (Patrick Garrow)! Dutch is like hells no but takes her to Turin anyway.

Turin is at an out of the way facility where the RAC doesn’t have prying eyes.  Turin brought his own interrogator, Phil (Chris Hoffman).  Sabine will hopefully identify the other Level 6 soldiers so he can get rid of them from the RAC.  Turin has a special level of torture. Using reactions from photos she sees through special glasses they will be able to sniff out the L6 agents. While everyone is distracted, Phil pulls out a special pick weapon but Sabine heard it and proceeded to cut his head off in an awesome sequence. While her eyes were still covered man!

The stick according to Sabine is a Dreadnought.  Getting brain dead is a way to kill L6. That’s good to know. She claims that “Phil” was also a six and was trying to kill her so she wouldn’t talk.  John was able to confirm seeing faded green goo from the head.  Turin is actually happy because he was wondering who the mole was.

Turin and Dutch walk down a hall. He wants to clean house at the RAC so he will lay low for now but Dutch and the others are on their own.  They need get as much information out of Sabine as possible before the Black Root starts hunting for her so she’s going back with them.  Right before they leave Sabine starts crying.  She hasn’t felt a kill for a very long time.  She’s seriously wondering what D’Avin did to her.

Back on Lucy Sabine gets a new detonation necklace. Dutch leaves D’Avin and Sabine alone.  He deserves some answers. She gives the same story again that Khlyen sent her to protect him.  She fell for D’Avin’s jawline though.  She understands that D’Avin slept with her as a way of trying to move on from Dutch.  She seems fine with it, just regrets green plasma coming out of her afterwards.  D’Avin notices that she is still bleeding in the head from her fight with Phil.  He rushes to tell Dutch this.  Dutch thinks Sabine is using him.  She’s getting rid of her as soon as they get the info.  D’Avin wants her to find another way.  Have John scan her or something.  Well, John does some brain scans.  He compares the dead Phil’s brain with Sabine’s and figures that L6s are created by having the green goo block out emotions and bonding.  Right after Sabine collapsed, the amount of plasma was almost gone, but her most recent scan shows that the plasma is re-growing. So her sudden humanity is temporary.  Well that sucks!

Sabine and Dutch talk.  Sabine reveals that the process of becoming a Six is more mental since it breaks all bonds you have with people.  The more anti-social you are, the better the process.  Dutch admits that Khlyen broke her at the cradle which would probably make her a great L6 candidate.  Despite Dutch’s treatment, Sabine likes her. Dutch and Sabine make a deal.  She’s let go if she provides the identities of the other L6 agents.  Black Root will come after her anyway so Dutch doesn’t have to get her hands dirty.

John is back in Leith to pick up a Level II warrant from Bellus (Nora McLellan).  Like last time, Bellus warns John about what happened last time Dutch was kept in the dark about a warrant.  John feels like this really isn’t her business.  He can take warrants if he wants to.  Bellus lets him go but thinks Dutch and D’Avin deserve better.

On Lucy, D’Avin and Sabine get in to a small tub to do some neuro-binding.  While Sabine can reveal the Sixes that she knows, D’Avin with the plasma may be able to tap into all of them.  Sabine puts a drop of goo into both D’Avin and her mouth and some smeared on their hands. They hold hands and D’Avin is wearing Turin’s glasses that Sabine wore earlier.  D’Avin starts getting flashes and winds up in a woods with Sabine.  Snow is covering the bare trees.  They find a mirrored 3-d box.  D’Avin is blocked from going towards it but he tries to work through the resistance.  Dutch and John have to pull him out before he makes headway because he is having some sensory overload.  John is able to report that they got a decent list.  Something interesting. A lot of those Six agents have a last known address in Old Town. What’s up with that?

Dutch tells John she doesn’t trust herself to trust Sabine. She does have the good idea of making sure that the people identified as a Six is legit.  If not, then they have to kill Sabine before she becomes a full Six again.

At Old Town, Dutch goes undercover with John to help ID some Six agents.  She is able to tag one by “sneezing” on him.  John thinks that they should trust Sabine because the data she provided was sound.  Dutch finds herself at the Royale.  She wants to call it a night and will meet John back on the ship. John meanwhile sees Senbek and goes after her.  Dutch goes to Sabine’s room trying to find anything else Sabine might be hiding.

On Lucy, D’Avin is babysitting Sabine.  She offers sex again but D’Avin says nope, don’t want a repeat of what happened last time.  Instead he can help her get drunk.  He remembers seeing the silver box and she claims that she took him to the peach farm that she remembers but it didn’t look much like farm to D’Avin but okay.  Sabine is happy that D’Avin is her first and possibly only emotional connection that she’s had in over 60 years.  Dang that’s a long time!  D’Avin doesn’t really know how to react to that news but he does believe that what she’s feeling can’t be real.  Sabine chastises him that he can’t dictate how she’s supposed to be feeling.  Point taken.  “You’re my last butterflies D’Avin Jaqobi.”  He’s going to make it a little more memorable.

John tries to comfort Senbek by telling her that his partner is connected to one of the nine families.  Senbek doesn’t believe him especially because she’s already done what she did.  Senbek does give him some intel though.  Greenwell was a facility where she was sent to build the wall. The technology came from somewhere else.  Hmmm.  When the wall was tested the sick, old, and very young died within a day.  The survivors were taken somewhere else by the Company.  She was put into Old Town when she started asking where the survivors went.  She set up the controls in Jelco (Pascal Langdale)’s private office at Spring Hill.  Of course she put them there.  Senbek is afraid that the Company will put her family in there too but John isn’t really being sympathetic, especially if people are going to be dying in Old Town.

Sabine and D’Avin reminisce with the hatch down looking at the moonlight.  They remember their first kiss.  Things get serious when Sabine mentions that she doesn’t want him watching when Dutch kills her.  She is starting to feel herself changing back.  Sabine wants him to miss her maybe say something meaningful about her, even if it’s a lie.  I actually felt bad for her in that moment.  She didn’t ask for the L6 life just like D’Avin was being forced into it.  They hug each other.

Dutch Black Root giphy

Dutch finds a wand and Sabine’s BDD.  A bright light appears outside.  Dutch goes to look at it when she hears the door opening.  She starts attacking whoever came in.  It’s a Black Root agent (Michael Brown)!  He’s looking for Sabine.  Noticing the similar wand he busts out, she guesses that Sabine is Black Root as well.  He just wants to know where Khlyen is.  Dutch talks trash and proceeds to back up her statements about her bad ass team.  The Black Root agent reveals that Sabine was supposed to kill Dutch and the others once they found Khlyen.  She even talked to them about Dutch’s attitude.  Dutch follows up with a dreadnought to the head.  Fatality! That Black Root agent was talking way too much. Great for us, but not so great for Black Root in general, just saying.

Dutch is not happy to find John has turned off his comm link and that D’Avin has let Sabine go.  She tells him about Sabine being Black Root. She was looking for Khlyen, she lied about protecting them! D’Avin doesn’t think it matters because he put tracker on her before removing the bomb around her neck.  He wanted to give her a fighting chance.  As someone who experienced trying to become a Six, he sympathizes.  It could’ve been anyone of them in the same situation.  Good point D’av.  Based on where she showed him earlier, D’Avin thinks Sabine is on Leith looking for something.

John gets in trouble again when he breaks into Jelco’s office.  John finds Senbek tied up and bleeding. He is caught by the jerk commander.  Senbek couldn’t keep her mouth shut.  Jelco has John on video breaking into his office.  They put John in this cell that looks like a lit up bee hive or cocoon.  He looks a little bloody.  Yeah John, you wishing you took Bellus’s advice now?

On Leith, Sabine is looking for that mirrored 3D cube in the middle of the gosh darn forest.  Dutch finds her.  Sabine explains that she has an ulterior motive to finding Khlyen.  A fight of course ensues.  Dutch has her defeated when Sabine tells her that she needs Khlyen’s help because he’s able to still feel emotion even with the plasma.  Khlyen was there at the beginning of the RAC, green goo, L6, everything.  But something about Dutch made the man rebel.  Sabine also reveals that Khlyen has hidden all memories of twin Dutch from the plasma.  Interesting.  Dutch lets Sabine up.  Sabine spits some more knowledge to Dutch.  She’s already mostly a Six anyway because Khlyen trained her that way so the transition would be easy.  Dutch is with the Jaqobis brothers because they feel and she wants to be surrounded by that.  Sabine realizes that time is short.  She’s almost back to being a complete Six.  She gets down on her knees and asks Dutch to end it. Dutch shoots Sabine in the head.  Dutch needs a minute to shake it off.

Dutch finds the mirrored cube.  She touches one of the squares and it ripples.  She is able to move through it like a doorway.  She finds a room full of weapons, a doll, jewelry case and the infamous red box.  She even finds some green goo.  Back on Lucy Dutch explains to Davin that she thinks that Khlyen left that safehouse for her as a really unique message.  Dutch is talking we see Sabine being dragged off by men in white coats.  She already opened the red box.  The message is one word.  Aneela. The weapon, the dreadnought.  Is this Dutch’s twin that is in Khlyen’s memories? We end the episode on that note!

More Thoughts

The plot thickens guys! I really liked Sabine in this episode and a part of me wanted to hate her like Dutch.  She was hitting on so many points from her relationship with D’Avin to Dutch’s dependence on both brothers.  The fact that she wanted help from Khlyen it’s hard to say if she was telling the truth with that.  I think she was because she wanted to keep the emotions she was able to feel for that brief period of time.  Something tells me we haven’t seen the last of her and unfortunately, her original no emotion objective will be in place.  If Davin decides to he may be able to help her again at least temporarily.

Is killing Aneela what Khlyen has been trying to train Dutch to do this entire time?  Time will tell, as she is on the hunt for her in next week’s episode.  Isn’t it interesting that Khlyen doesn’t have to be in an episode to still make an impact?

For John’s situation, just one comment:  Why didn’t John listen to Bellus?  I feel like he has no one to blame for that but himself.  Let’s see how he gets himself out of this predicament.

Let me know your thoughts of the episode in the comments!
