Sleepy Hollow S2 Ep 5 Recap: The Weeping Lady

Sleepyheads #Craneonthebrain was definitely in full effect in this episode of “The Weeping Lady.”

We start off with Ms. Caroline (Laura Spencer) giving mended and new colonial clothes to Ichabod.  Things get awkward when Caroline hits on Ichabod.  When he mentions that he’s married, she is of course embarrassed.   Things get a little more awkward when Abbie walks in and Caroline assumes she is Mrs. Crane.  Abbie’s expression on her face was so funny!  Caroline leaves and Abbie teases Ichabod about the situation.  As Abbie put it, “Anyone could tell that girl had a case of Crane on the brain!” Seriously Ichabod, Caroline made you churned butter.  That was a clue if there ever was one!  Ichabod has concerns about Katrina and Abbie is like she can take care of herself.

205FF_scn2pt_0008_f_previewSpeaking of Katrina, we finally get to see her using a little bit of her powers.  She writes a letter to Ichabod then summons a crow that was nearby to hand him the message. Abraham walks in just as she is closing the window.  Abraham still talks about how she will be his queen and she would want for nothing.  While Katrina is thankful for the comforts he has provided, she’s not as concerned with material things.  Abraham wants Katrina to choose to be at his side for the inevitable apocalypse.  However, he’s not going to wait forever for her to decide.

We find out why up until this point Katrina hasn’t used any magic when Abraham (Neil Jackson) warns Henry via mirror conference that Katrina may have found a way around the wards Henry set around the house. I liked the use of mirrors for their communication!  Henry mentions he will check the wards and if necessary make them stronger.  Abraham still thinks that he can convince her to join their side of her own free will and follow the plans Moloch has for her. Henry warns that they may need to try to sever the ties she has with Crane and offers to cause pain between his parents.  Henry really seems to relish that! Abraham’s having no part of that. Henry searches through some of Katrina’s journals for a sin to use against her.  He finds one!  This makes me wonder if that is one reason why he moved to the house, to get information to use against Katrina and Crane.

A teenaged couple sees a lady dressed all in black, hit their front car window after making out. Crane goes to Caroline’s house to personally apologize for what happened earlier in the day.  I admire Crane’s stance on talking face to face about their earlier awkward conversation.  He smoothes things over with Caroline like the gentleman he is, especially when he bows to her.  Right after Crane leaves the weeping lady strikes poor Caroline!

Abbie is called to the case where they find Caroline’s body by the river. Ichabod is understandably upset and insists on helping.  Abbie mentions that Caroline may have drowned further upriver where there is a make out place for teenagers.  They find the same teenage couple that was there that night.  When they mention that they thought they saw a legend come to life in the form of the Weeping Lady, Ichabod and Abbie exchange a look.

Abbie and Ichabod go to the library to read more about the Weeping Lady legend.  The story goes that the weeping lady got jipped by her fiancé or husband.  She goes into the river to drown herself because of it.  She dresses in black and has green freaky eyes. Abbie learns this the hard way when she finds weeping lady at the library and gets sucked into her black pool of watery death.  Ichabod manages to pull her out.  Fortunately they ran into Hawley earlier who rushed to give Abbie CPR.  That was an intense scene and Ichabod’s reaction to seeing Abbie almost dead like that was devastating as he felt totally helpless.  Ichabod needs learn CPR ASAP!

Before Abbie’s swim, Ichabod gets Katrina’s message from the crow. She mentions being magically limited but she doesn’t say that Henry and Abraham are trying to turn her.  Hawley’s researching monsters and offers to help them at a discount next time.  Was it just me or was there a little bit of flirting going on between Hawley and Abbie?

205FF_scn4pt_0094_f_previewIchabod and Abbie figure out that there is a pattern with whom weepy lady has been going after, which is women Ichabod cares deeply about. Abbie in her fight with the weeping lady caught some fabric from her shawl.  Ichabod recognizes it.  Flashback time! It turns out that the weeping lady is none other than Ichabod’s ex-fiancée Mary (Heather Lind), who was a little obsessive with him.  She had an arranged engagement with Ichabod back in England but he broke it off before leaving for America or so he thought.  Mary comes all the way from England only for Ichabod to reject her again but she’s not buying it.  She had a serious case of Crane on the brain!  Mary even gets jealous of Katrina because she knew even before Icky and Katrina did that they had the hots for each other. Ichabod’s confused though because he got a letter from her telling him she left and she was sorry for her behavior.  So why is her spirit still haunting Sleepy Hollow? I suspect a little witchery was afoot.  They realize that Katrina is next on her list, especially since Ichabod dropped the letter in the water trying to get Abbie out.

The Witness duo stop by Hawley’s place to borrow a weapon that could help them against Mary.  Ichabod and Abbie race to Abraham’s house to warn Katrina but Mary has already struck.  Abbie had noticed when she briefly came for air during her attack that she was in the same place where they found Ms. Caroline.   They rush to the lake and find Katrina in the woods not too far from the river.  Katrina used a little bit of magic seaweed to get away from psycho Mary.  Ichabod explains that the weeping lady is Mary and Katrina met her before.  Katrina mentions that Mary was raised by dark magic and Henry is the only one that could’ve done it.  She suggests they use dark magic to help Mary’s spirit go away from this world.  With Abbie’s help  Katrina casts the spell while Ichabod holds off psycho Mary. He doesn’t for long especially after firing the crossbow they got from Hawley .  Fortunately Katrina and Abbie completed the spell by the time Mary reached them.  Before Mary’s spirit goes she points out Katrina when Ichabod asks why she was still here. Why am I not surprised?  Ichabod can tell Katrina is hiding something when she evades the question of why Mary was pointing at her.

205FF_scn50_1283_f_previewKatrina reluctantly explains what happened back in the day.  Mary asked to meet with Katrina by the river on a cliff one night.  They had an argument with Mary accusing Katrina of seducing Ichabod and putting a spell on him while Katrina was denying the whole thing.  There was a struggle and Mary tripped over the cliff and hit her head.  She died. Katrina gave Ichabod a letter in Mary’s handwriting saying she left when she really didn’t. As with all of her excuses, her reasoning was she wanted to protect him and not have to deal with going back to England to explain what happened to her parents.  So did her parents ever find out what happened to their daughter?  Or did Katrina send them a letter as well?  She felt that his role as the witness in the war against evil had to take precedence over an accidental death.  Ichabod gets upset with Katrina because she keeps secrets and he has to find out the hard way.  Abraham shows up all late thinking Ichabod managed to take Katrina away.  Katrina explains that a spirit took her instead.  Katrina asks for a truce because Ichabod saved her life.  She goes back with Abraham looking longingly at Icky.  I liked how they switched back in forth between Ichabod seeing Headless and Katrina seeing Abraham.

Hawley comes back to his hideaway and sees Jenny. So nice to see her even briefly! Jenny volunteered to return the crossbow for Abbie. Hawley thought that they mutually decided they were going to keep things professional.  She initially thinks that he’s seeing someone but he denies it.  When Hawley goes for the hug Jenny gives Hawley a seductive kiss instead and leaves with his drink! I’m hoping that this doesn’t become a love triangle between sisters because they seem to be in a good place right now.

Ichabod and Abbie are at Ms. Caroline’s memorial gathering at the bar near the pier. Ichabod is in more formal colonial regalia. Abbie and Ichabod share a drink.  Ichabod feels like Abbie’s and his duty as witnesses must come before anything or anyone else.  He also asks a good question: while marriages can be rocky, without trust and honesty, how can it really survive? Well in Icky’s situation with Katrina, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to survive long.

Katrina thinks Abraham and Henry worked together to sow discord between her and Ichabod with Mary.  Abraham denies it.  Katrina starts to believe him when he mentions that he went to the river to rescue her.  He doesn’t want to see her unhappy.  I also believe Abraham on this one.  Since he loves her he wouldn’t do something that stupid to get on her bad side.

205FNSH_Ep205TheWeepingLadyscn58A_3811_previewMeanwhile, Henry is getting reamed by Moloch because Mary almost killed Katrina.  Moloch wants Katrina to be his chosen vessel.  He mentions that she would be one of the Hellfire Shards!  What is that I wonder? I’m thinking an evil witch who can throw a serious punch during the apocalypse.  Henry explains that the weeping lady wasn’t supposed to harm Katrina.  He thought that he was doing the right thing.  Moloch reminds him that he’s a soldier and not think for himself but should only obey!  Moloch was having all kinds of a temper tantrum! Henry cries like he disappointed his father after that conversation.

This was a meaty episode Sleepyheads! Looking forward to next week! So do you think Katrina will turn to the dark side? What about Henry? Can he still be redeemed?  And what is up with Jenny and Hawley? I hope to find out next week! I’m also hoping we see Irving.  Let us know what you think of the episode in the comments!
